Moon - Search for the darkside

Yesterday, I was watching a documentary called the wonders of moon and came to discover about it's dark side. It left me so awestruck that I decided to do my own research on it. Let's see what are these :-

SOME FACTS...

First of all, the ''dark side of the moon'' is sort of a cool misnomer, which actually is called the far side of the moon which not visible to us earth being. In fact the dark side is not darker than any part of the moon as sunlight falls equally all sides of the moon. So, the moon's far side is dark only in the sense that it is mysterious.

INTRO...

Only one side of the moon is visible to us on earth which is called the near side. The far side only was visible to the humanity when the Soviet spacecraft Luna 3 sent pictures home orbiting around the moon in the year 1959.

WHY DO WE ONLY SEE ONE SIDE...

A phenomenon called '' tidal locking '' is responsible for it. Due the gravitational effect of the earth on the moon, the moon and earth are tidally locked.

This means that it takes same amount of time for the moon to rotate once about it's axis as it takes for the moon to make one orbit around the earth. The moon's rotation and orbital period both are under four weeks. This synchronous rotation causes one side of the moon to always face the earth.

WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE FAR SIDE...

The far side looks very different from the near side. The moon's far side is heavily cratered but it lacks broad, dark, lower lying basins, the lunar sea or '' maria '' as earlier scientist called it as they thought they were bodies of water by analogy on earth but were later found to be attributable to volcanism.

On the far side are present the craters which are created due to the tilt of moon's axis. It is a very interesting phenomenon...the patches of lunar surface which are perpetually ''dark''.

So, although the dark side of the moon do not exist but much interesting and mysterious
''craters of eternal darkness'' do exist.
